The Middle channel at Sidewinder aka Rattlesnake Rapid is best choice overall. Left channel can be used if you are quick to respond and can turn your oarboat into the current on a narrow path; one oar broken and one oar lost as we watched from left bank in two days using left channel. Middle channel has become safest easiest route, little boney at top, setup and pull in your oars! Far right channel has diminished and is now boney. Good luck.

We are thinking about doing the Carson River this weekend with flows around 850 cfs.
Does anyone have any new or comments on this years Sidewinder? It has gotten kind of iffy the last couple years and tubes damaged going over the rapid.
Any comments please?

What is Sidewinder like? Any hazards I should know about? Going on June 27-28.

Rtennant: Please post an update if you don't hear anything. We are headed out July 9 and have the same question. Thanks!

A friend did the run on Saturday. He said, "Pretty straightforward at that flow (1600 cfs) with one HUGE root ball in the right channel a bit above Rattlesnake. Plenty of room to go right of it at that flow (1600 cfs) - it could become tight at the lower flow you'll likely see.

The left channel was an easy read and run class II on Monday July 11, 2023 at 1500 CFS on the Markleeville gauge. The middle (right) channel looked doable as well, but had a couple of submerged rocks and we weren't sure exactly how sharp they were. See pictures taken from the left bank about halfway down the rapid.
More obstacles may appear in the both channels as the water drops. If you scout it, watch your step so you don't squish caterpillars on the ground! There were hundreds out chomping on the grass they day we were there!
