American Whitewater has been working with Ron Rogers and the BLM Applegate Field Office considering recent access encounters along the Pit No. 1 Powerhouse Road to the BLM Pit River Campground. Today BLM announced they will open the campground to DAY USE ONLY for the Martin Luther King Day Holiday weekend – January 15th through the 17th. Boaters can park in the campground and use the open bathrooms. BLM asks for our help in keeping the area trash and vandalism free. If this opening runs smoothly BLM will consider more off-season openings of this campground to accommodate boaters when there are opportunistic flows on the Pit River.

Regarding the property owners locked gate on the Pit No. 1 Powerhouse Road, a BLM ranger has confirmed that the lock on the gate has been removed and that the property owner has been informed the gate cannot impede through access on Pit No. 1 Powerhouse Road. In addition, BLM has provided the local Sheriff’s office a copy of the road easement deed that details the public’s right of way on the road. When the campground is closed, the public is allowed to park on Pit No. 1 Powerhouse Road without blocking through access and within the easement which is 30 feet each side from the center line. Paddlers can also download a copy of the easement deed at the link below –

If boaters encounter a lock on the property owners gate, they are encouraged to report this to the Applegate Field Office - Phone: 530-233-4666
